Chicago partner Joe Bogdan teaches IP seminar at School of American Law in Ukraine

Joe Bogdan is a relatively new addition to Culhane Meadows’s Chicago office where he focuses his practice on intellectual property, information technology, outsourcing, entertainment and media, corporate, and mergers and acquisitions.

Joe recently traveled to Ukraine to teach a seminar entitled Managing and Licensing Intellectual Property to thirty-four Ukrainian lawyers and law students in separate sessions in Odessa and Lviv. In these progressive Ukrainian cities, the seminars were presented as a part of the School of American Law administered by IIT Chicago-Kent School of Law, and in local coordination with Odesa National Law Academy, law firm Jurline, and School of American Law in Ukraine.

The fifteen-hour, intensive, weekend-long seminar conveys the insights and tactics that Joe has learned in over twenty-five years as a lawyer and entrepreneur in intellectual asset management field. In particular, students abroad learn the intricacies of intellectual property management and licensing from the U.S. perspective. The seminar includes analysis of real-world intellectual property portfolios, from identifying portfolios that are ripe for extraction of unrealized value to formulating plans for delivering that value in the form of incremental revenue for the intellectual property owner. Topics covered include the importance of maximizing portfolio value, identifying the right (and the wrong) reasons for adopting a strategy of portfolio management, the teams required for effective portfolio management, monetizing a portfolio while avoiding traditional pitfalls, and identifying, anticipating, and meeting challenges that will arise in the intellectual asset management context.

The goal of the seminar is for students abroad who successfully complete the course to have an ability to comprehend and recall the fundamental principles of intellectual property licensing and portfolio management, while applying principles of intellectual asset management towards maximization of value and revenue. Students also learn to evaluate the merits of various viewpoints and opinions regarding intellectual property assets and their value and potential uses, as well as to generate unique and novel ideas, plans, and strategies for the protection and exploitation of an intellectual asset portfolio.

Joe Bogdan has been SVP of Legal and Business Affairs for World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), General Counsel and COO to multiple venture-backed technology companies, partner of Manatt Phelps, and also Of Counsel at Gardner, Carton and Douglas (now Drinker Biddle and Reath). Joe has previously taught Managing and Licensing Intellectual Property in Athens, Baku, Gdańsk, Tbilisi, and Wrocław, and is scheduled to teach it again in April 2018, on back-to-back weekends in Vilnius, Lithuania and Łódź, Poland.
